This monograph is a major scholarly book on Korean philosophy and religion: translated, annotated, introduced, and commented by Edward Y. J. Chung, Professor of Religious Studies, Asian Studies Chair, and KS Project Director, University of PEI, Charlottetown, Canada (https://www.upei.ca/communications/news/2022/03/dr-edward-chung-achieves-remarkable-publication-record). It is the pioneering study in a Western language of Chŏng Chedu 鄭齊斗 (Hagok 霞谷, 1649–1736) and Korean Wang Yangming Neo-Confucianism. Hagok was an eminent philosopher who established the unorthodox Yangming school (Yangmyŏnghak 陽明學) in Korea; he is as important as the three other eminent scholars of Korean Confucianism: Yi Hwang (T’oegye) and Yi I (Yulgok), and Jeong Yagyong (Dasan).

The book includes an annotated scholarly translation (189 pages) of the Chonŏn 存言 (Testament), Hagok’s most significant work on Korean Yangming thought. Edward Chung translates, annotates, and discusses forty-one key essays from all three parts of the Chonŏn that represent the heart of Hagok’s thought reflecting on “his life experience as a scholar, thinker, and moral-spiritual practitioner.” Chung’s in-depth presentation provides a comprehensive introduction (109 pages) to Hagok’s life, scholarship, and thought, which includes a thought-provoking discussion of Hagok’s “great synthesis” of Wang’s philosophy of mind, self-cultivation, and moral practice in relation to the classical teaching of Confucius and Mencius as well as Hagok’s critical analysis of Zhu Xi 朱熹 Neo-Confucianism and Korean Sŏngnihak 性理學. Chung concludes that Hagok was “an original scholar in the Sŏngnihak school, a great transmitter and interpreter of Yangming Neo-Confucianism in Korea, and a creative thinker whose integration of these two traditions inaugurated a distinctively Korean system of ethics and spirituality.” This book also offers an enormous number of original quotations, annotated notes, cross-referencing citations, and interpretive comments (textual, historical, philosophical, or comparative), a full glossary, and an updated, extensive bibliography.
