1. 먼저 한국학진흥사업단 뉴스레터 독자들을 위해 자기소개 부탁드립니다.

 

안녕하세요? 아제르바이잔언어대학교 한국학센터 소장 바하르입니다. 저는 2005-2009년에 아제르바이잔언어대학교에서 한국어통번역과를 전공하여 2010년부터 2017년까지 한국학중앙연구원에서 사회학 전공으로 석박사 과정을 밟았습니다. 2017년에 “한국에서 해외여행의 형성과정: 1980년대 해외여행자유화를 중심으로”라는 주제로 박사과정을 마치고 아제르바이잔으로 귀국하였습니다. 그리고 그해부터 현재까지 아제르바이잔 언어대학교에서 센터 운영 및 강의를 하고 있습니다.

 

2. 최근 한국에서도 관련 방송 프로그램을 통해 아제르바이잔에 대한 음식과 문화가 소개되는 것은 물론 아제르바이잔 내에서도 K-Pop 이나 K-Drama가 전파를 타고 있다고 합니다. 현재 아제르바이잔 내에서의 한국에 대한 관심이나 인식은 어떠한가요?

 

현재 아제르바이잔에서 특히 청소년들 간에 한류 열풍이 상당히 뜨겁습니다. 학원 등에서 한국어를 배우려고 하는 사람들도 많고 K-pop 팬클럽 등도 많습니다. 최근에 양국 간에 경제, 건설 분야 등에서 협력이 활발해짐에 따라 전체적으로 한국에 대한 관심이 높다고 할 수 있습니다. 저희 대학교 전공 중에서도 한국어 통번역 전공이 인기가 제일 많습니다.

 

3. 아제르바이잔언어대학교에서는 언어대학으로서 한국어에 대해 어떤 과정을 운영하고 있으며, 한국학과 관련된 프로그램이나 연구 활동 등이 있는지 소개해 주시고 아제르바이잔의 한국학 현황 및 차기 수요는 어떠한지 설명 부탁드립니다.

 

현재 아제르바이잔언어대학교에서는 한국어 통번역전공이 학사 및 석사 과정으로 운영되고 있습니다. 학사 과정의 경우에는 매년 15명의 입학생을 받고 있는데 석사 과정의 경우에는 매년 최대 선정 인원수가 3명입니다.

 

저희 대학교는 현재 한국학과 관련된 여러 사업 및 연구를 수행하고 있습니다. 한국어-아제르바이잔어 사전을 발행하였고, 현재 아제르바이잔어-한국어 사전도 작성 중입니다. 그리고 작년에 한국 전래 동화를 아제르바이잔 어로 번역하여 발행했는데 번역 작업은 학생들이 하였다는 점도 언급하고 싶습니다. 뿐만 아니라 현재 진행하고 있는 해외한국학씨앗형사업의 일환으로 한국어 문법, 한국역사와 사회라는 교재도 집필 중이고 곧 완료되어 출판될 것입니다. 그리고 대학교에서 모든 언어를 포괄하여 진행하는 공동 연구가 새롭게 시작되었습니다. 연구는 각국의 언어 정치에 관한 것이고, 우리 센터에서는 한국의 언어 정치에 관한 연구를 수행할 것입니다.

 

또한 아제르바이잔에서 한국학, 한국문학 등에 대한 관심을 높이려고 한국학퀴즈 대회 등도 개최하고 있다는 것을 언급하고 싶습니다. 한국학중앙연구원의 지원으로 개최된 본 퀴즈대회는 아제르바이잔 청소년들로부터 엄청난 인기를 누리고 있습니다. 아제르바이잔대학교 외에바쿠국립대학교에 한국학 전공이 있습니다. 또한 바쿠공과대학을 포함한 약 3개의 다른 대학에서 한국어를 교양과목으로 가르치고 있습니다.

 

현재 아제르바이잔에서 한국학은 한국어 위주의 학습에만 머문다고 생각합니다. 그러나 날로 한국에 대한 관심이 높아지고 있어 한국학에 대한 수요가 급증할 것입니다. 양국 정부 차원에서도 관계가 발전되고 있어 한국에 대한 관심은 언어와 K-pop, K-drama 등을 넘어 여러 분야로 확대될 것이라고 생각합니다.

 

4. 아제르바이잔언어대학교는 2019년에 해외한국학씨앗형사업에 선정되어 “한국학센터 설립 및 한국어통·번역학과 내실화” 프로젝트를 수행하고 있습니다. 현재까지 프로젝트는 어떻게 진행되고 있으며, 교육 현장에서 겪는 어려움이 있다면 무엇일까요?

 

본 사업의 주요 내용은 한국학센터 설립, 한국어문법 및 한국학 교재 집필, 한국에 대한 정보를 아제르바이잔 사람들이 쉽게 접할 수 있도록 블로그를 개설하고 한국학 전문가를 양성하는 것이었습니다. 올해는 본 사업을 완료하는 마지막 해라 사업의 목적들을 거의 다 완성했다고 할 수 있습니다. 한국학센터가 설립되면서 다양한 방향으로 학술적인 활동을 벌이고 있으며 또한 센터 블로그가 개설되면서 수시로 한국정치와 사회, 문화, 문학 등에 관련된 정보들이 번역되어 게시됩니다. 앞서 일 년에 한 번씩 한국학퀴즈대회를 연다고 했는데 작년에 본 퀴즈대회의 우승자는 다른 대학교 다른 전공의 한 학생이었는데 이 학생은 저희 블로그에 게시된 내용들을 열심히 읽고 배웠다고 합니다. 이 말을 들은 순간 뿌듯하다고 말해야 할지 뭔가 사업의 초기 성과를 본 느낌이었습니다. 그리고 저희 대학교 학생들을 위해서 한국경제와 한국 사회와 역사 등의 과목들이 개설되었는데 학생들이 이 과목들에 적극적으로 참여하고 있으며 또한 한국학 학술회 등에도 많은 관심을 보이고 있습니다. 그 외에 한국학 및 한국어문법 교재도 거의 완성되어 가고 있으며 곧 있으면 아마 출판 소식을 전할 수 있을 것 같습니다.

 

사업을 진행하면서 가장 어려웠던 것은 아무래도 COVID19로 인한 업무 처리였습니다. 게다가 도중에 전쟁까지(제 2차 아제르바이잔 –아르메니아 전쟁) 발생하여 한동안 비대면으로도 모임, 세미나 등을 진행할 수 없게 되었습니다. 이런 이유로 센터의 설립도 미루게 되었고 또한 현지 연구진의 한국방문도 연기되었습니다.

 

 5. 해외한국학씨앗형사업 수행 기간이나 이후라도 꼭 이루고 싶은 목표나 희망이 있다면 무엇일까요?

한국학 분야에 있어서 아제르바이잔에서 해야 할 일들이 아직 많습니다. 관련 서적들도 많이 집필되거나 번역되어야 하고, 또한 연구도 활발해져야 합니다. 무엇보다 아제르바이잔언어대학교 내에서 한국학 전공이 설립되었으면 하는 바람이 있습니다.

 

6. 저희 질문에 대한 상세한 답변에 감사드립니다. 마지막 질문을 드립니다. 한국과 아제르바이잔 양국의 한국학 연구를 위해 함께 할 수 있는 일이 있을까요?

 

아제르바이잔과 한국은 지리적으로 멀리 떨어진 나라들이지만 역사나 문화 등에서 서로 비슷한 면들이 많습니다. 때문에 서로 비교 연구도 많이 할 수 있습니다. 실은 저희 센터는 코카서스 지역에서 한국학 연구의 중심지가 될 수 있다고 생각합니다. 한국학 연구를 수행하기 위해서 한국어를 잘 아는 인재들이 있으니 작은 동기를 부여하면 한국학 연구가 활발히 이뤄질 수 있다고 생각합니다.

Meeting with Korean Studies Scholars Abroad

1. First, please introduce yourself to the readers of the KSPS newsletter.

 

Hello. My name is Bahar Aliyeva, and I am the director of the Center for Korean Studies at Azerbaijan University of Languages. From 2005 to 2009, I majored in Korean Interpretation and Translation at Azerbaijan University of Languages. From 2010 to 2017, I majored in Sociology at the Academy of Korean Studies for my Master‘s and Doctorate. In 2017, I received my Ph.D. with the dissertation topic, “The Formation Process of Overseas Travel in Korea: Focused on the Overseas Travel Liberalization of the 1980s,” and returned to Azerbaijan. Since then, I have been managing the [Korean studies] center and giving lectures at Azerbaijan University of Languages.

 

2. Recently, the food and culture of Azerbaijan have been introduced through Korean television programs. Meanwhile, it is said that K-pop and K-dramas are being broadcast in Azerbaijan. In Azerbaijan, what is the current level of understanding and interest in Korea?

 

Currently, in Azerbaijan, the craze for Hallyu is very strong, particularly among young people. There are many people looking to learn Korean at academies, and there are many K-pop fan clubs. As cooperation between the two countries in the areas of economics and construction has become more active recently, one could say that the overall interest in Korea has risen. Among the majors at our university, the Korean Interpretation and Translation major is the most popular.

 

3. Please introduce the Korean language courses and Korean studies programs and research activities at Azerbaijan University of Languages, as a language university. Also, please explain the current situation of and demand for Korean studies in Azerbaijan.

 

At Azerbaijan University of Languages, there is currently a bachelor’s and a master’s program in Korean Interpretation and Translation. In the case of the bachelor’s program, we accept 15 students each year, while in the case of the master’s program, we accept a maximum of three students each year.

 

Our university is currently conducting various projects and research related to Korean studies. We published a Korean-Azerbaijani dictionary, and we are currently writing an Azerbaijani-Korean dictionary as well. And last year, we published a translation of Korean children’s stories in Azerbaijani, which, notably, our students helped to translate. Not only this, but through the support of the Seed Program for Korean Studies, we are compiling textbooks entitled Korean Grammar and Korean History and Society, which soon will be completed and published.

 

Furthermore, collaborative research involving all the languages at the university has recently begun. The research is on the language politics in each country, and our center is conducting the research on language politics in Korea.

 

In addition, I would like to mention that we also hold a Korean Studies Quiz Competition to increase interest in Korean studies and Korean literature in Azerbaijan. This quiz competition, made possible by the Academy of Korean Studies’ support, is incredibly popular among Azerbaijani youth.

 

Apart from the Azerbaijan University of Languages, there is a Korean studies major at Baku State University. Korean is also taught as an elective at about three other universities, including Baku Engineering University.

 

Currently, I think Korean studies in Azerbaijan is limited to Korean language education. However, because interest in Korea is growing daily, the demand for Korean studies is skyrocketing. The relations between each country’s governments is also developing, so I think the interest in Korea will expand into other fields beyond language, K-pop, and K-dramas.

 

 

4. The Azerbaijan University of Languages was selected as a Seed Program for Korean Studies in 2019 to establish a Korean studies center and reinforce the Korean Interpretation and Translation department. Thus far, how has the project been going, and what difficulties have you faced?

 

The main content of the project is the establishment of a center for Korean studies, the compilation of textbooks on Korean grammar and Korean studies, the creation of a blog to help Azerbaijanis more easily access information about Korea, and the fostering of Korean studies experts. This is the last year of the project, and I can say the goals have nearly been completed. Since establishing the Center for Korean Studies, we have been translating and publishing information related to Korean politics, society, culture, and literature. We have also held the aforementioned quiz competition once a year. Last year’s winner was from a different university and a different major, and they had fervently read and learned all the content we had posted on our blog. When I heard this, I was so proud and felt as if I was seeing the first fruits of the project.

 

Also, courses on Korean economics and Korean society and culture were opened for our students. The students actively participate in the courses and have shown great interest in our Korean studies conference.

Apart from this, our Korean studies and Korean grammar textbooks are almost completed, and I think I will soon be able to share the news of their publication.

 

The greatest difficulty while conducting this project has probably been the processing of work due to Covid-19. Then, a war broke out (the Second Azerbaijan-Armenian War), so for some time we could not even hold online gatherings and seminars. Because of this, the establishment of the center was delayed, and visits by local researchers to Korea were put off.

 

 

5. What goal or hope do you wish to achieve during the implementation period of the Seed Project for Korean Studies?

 

Much work remains in the field of Korean studies in Azerbaijan. Related books need to be compiled and translated, and there needs to be more active research. More than anything, I hope that a Korean studies major will be established at Azerbaijan University of Languages.

 

6. Thank you for your detailed answers to our questions. In conclusion, what work can be done by Korea and Azerbaijan for Korean studies in both countries?

 

Although Azerbaijan and Korea are geographically very distant, there are many similar aspects in regard to history and culture. Therefore, lots of comparative research is possible. Actually, I think that our center can become the hub for Korean studies research in the Caucasus region. We have many talented individuals who understand Korean well for conducting Korean studies research, so with a little more motivation, I think that Korean studies research can be actively achieved.
