Korean Studies and I
CHIEN CHIN SUNG
(Chair Professor at Dept. of Chinese Language & Section Chief of Korean Research Center,
National Sun Yat-sen University)
This phrase was written by me on Dasan Pavilion of National Sun Yat-sen University. Jeong Yak-Yong whose pen name is Dasan was devoted to Yukgyeong (Six Classics of Ancient China) and was exiled to various places, such as Pohang, Janggi and Gangjin, for a few years. The above phrase means to think about his mood quietly while looking at the bright moon at a pavilion located at the mountain foot of Siziwan where wild waves are surging endlessly.
Kaohsiung City located in southern Taiwan is 350km away from Taipei and a beautiful seaside town like Busan in Korea. There is Siziwan Valley in the southwest of Kaohsiung and this is where Sun Yat-sen University is. The College of Literature is located near a sheer cliff and Dasan Pavilion is on that mountain slope. Its lines are not that magnificent, and the timber and moderate decorations are simple but are not shabby at all. There are pavilions to pay tribute to Confucius and Mencius on the right of Dasan Pavilion and there is a small building that connotes the meaning of Chuang-tzu’s empty ship down from the pavilion. Dasan would never be lonely with those three friends, Confucius, Mencius and Chuang-tzu.
The relationship between Korea and I began long ago. When I was attending a graduate school of National Taiwan University in 1977, I met various Korean students studying at the school. After I became the section chief of the Chinese Language Department of Sun Yat-sen University 30 years later, I invited Korean scholars and asked them to participate in seminars or to give keynote speeches. Also, I tried to get subsidies from the Taiwan Dept. of Science & Technology in 2009. Due to such efforts, Sun Yat-sen University was designated as a place to possess books about Korean literature in classical Chinese and successfully attracted a total of 350 million won in subsidies from the government. In addition, the university was able to acquire about 12,400 books and data with the help of many professors, including Choi Wan-Sik, Won Jong-Rye, Oh Su-Hyang and Lee Nam-Jong, head of Kyungin Publishing Han Jeong-Hee, Dr. Kim Hyeong-Sul and M.S. Chu Chan-Ho. The Institute for the Translation of Korean Classic contributed 500 sequels of
I have somewhat different opinions about Korean studies compared with other Chinese scholars. Chinese scholars are focused on extra-area Chinese classics. In other words, they approach Korean studies by placing their focus on China. I realized that Korean classics are classics of the Korean people, not part of Chinese Sinology, after conducting on-site studies. Based on such a viewpoint, I began to study Lee Je-Hyeon, Ryu Seong-Ryong and Jeong Yak-Yong in Korea from 2011 and visited Korea about 20 times. There were many historically meaningful places from the Imjin River to the north to Jejudo to the south, in addition to Seoul. I visited many places, such as Paju, Goyang, Ganghwa, Gangneung, Namyangju, Chungju, Cheongju, Mungyeong, Cheongpungbu, Damyang, Andong, Gyeongju, Ulsan, Janggi, Busan, Gumi, Gimhae, Jinju, Gangjin, Jeonju, Imsil, Yesan, Gunwi, Anseong and Suwon, to execute field investigations. They were partially an investigation about Lee Je-Hyeon and Jeong Yak-Yong, but a more important purpose was to find traces of mountain fortresses of the Joseon era and Japanese fortresses. For this, I especially studied Ryu Seong-Ryong and the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592.
‘On-site studies’ were newly developed by me. As I studied Chinese studies for about 10 years and published books, including
My study doesn’t divide Chinese people, Taiwanese people, Korean people and Joseon people and doesn’t involve the viewpoint of China-oriented extra-area Chinese classics. I just wanted to confirm the lives of old writers in this land where they lived and loved and to corroborate the reality that they expressed through rational reasoning by looking at the geographical conditions of this place.
My studies and the establishment of the Korean center by Sun Yat-sen University are aimed at helping Korean studies take root, blossom and bear fruit in Taiwan. The university certainly has established the best Korean book database in Taiwan but has no departments dedicated to Korean language and literature. Kaohsiung has two schools, Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages and National University of Kaohsiung teaching languages and literature of East Asia. Their influence, however, is not significant, because those schools don’t invite so enough students to major in the Korean language.
Considering academic circles in Taiwan, we’ve already learned that Taiwanese scholars had to have a broad grasp of Korean studies beyond their initial fields of study using key points of reference from Chinese literature. Accordingly, our center opened ‘the 1st Korea-Taiwan Korean Anthology and Chinese Studies Research Academic Seminar’ in cooperation with Korea University in October of 2013. Out of the nine participants of the seminar, Prof. Wang Kuo-Liang of National Taiwan University and Prof. Mao Wen-Fang of National Chung Cheng University have continuously engaged in studies about Korea. Prof. Mao stayed in Korea for a semester as a visiting scholar of Korea University during a sabbatical year. Our center has opened its door wide to help scholars interested in Korean studies through sharing electronic data and introducing sites specializing in Korean studies. Sadly, the bill regarding ‘Korean Literary Collections-Reading Meeting’ applied to the Department of Science & Technology last year wasn’t adopted. We are going to hold gatherings to share information on Korean studies at our school and at other universities this year and try to launch the ‘Korean Literary Collections-Reading Meeting.’ Through this, an increasing number of people will actually read books, interact and participate in researching Korean studies.
I am not the kind of a person that promotes and advocates Korean studies based on big ideals and goals. I don’t deserve to be thought of as such as person. I am just someone who enjoys reading the classics. I knocked on the door of Korean classics, entered it and admired the deep and wide knowledge of ancient Korean writers while reading these books. I would like to share this pleasure and the joy of finding such treasures with others.
