    1) 유럽의 한국학


    유럽 내 한국학이 꾸준한 성장을 해왔음은 한국국제교류재단의 해외 한국학 조사에 잘 나타나 있다. 현재 유라시아를 포함한 유럽내 236개 대학에서 한국학 강의가 개설되어 있고, 그 중 112개 대학이 한국학 학위과정을 제공하고 있다. (http://www.kf.or.kr/koreanstudies/koreaStudiesMap.do)

    1977년 유럽한국학협회 (The Association for Korean Studies in Europe, AKSE)가 창립되어 매 2년마다 유럽한국학 대회를 개최해왔고, 유럽 각 대학의 한국학 소식을 알리는 AKSE Newsletter를 매해 출판해왔고 이는 다음의 링크에서 볼 수 있다. http://94.136.40.103/~koreanstudies.eu/?page_id=48

    최근 2017년 부터는 사회과학 분야에서 한국학을 연구하고 있는 신진 학자와 중진 학자들이 모여 사회과학내 한국학 유럽 네트워크 (The Social Sciences Korean Studies European Network, SoKEN)를 탄생시켰고, 매해 워크샵을 개최하여 유럽내 한국학의 사회과학적 접근과 연구를 심화해오고 있다. 뿐만 아니라 한국어 교육과 연구에도 심혈을 기울여 2007년 유럽 한국어 교육자협회(European Association for Korean Language Education)를 창립한 이래 격년제로
    학회를 개최하여  한국어교육자 간 연구를 공유하고 교류를 해왔다. 이와 같이     유럽의 한국학은 전통적인 지역학 (conventional area studies)이 중점을 두어온 인문과학과 더불어 사회과학과 한국어에 이르는
    광범위한 분야에 걸쳐 연구와 교육의 넓이과 깊이를 더하고 있고 또한 그 균형을 유지하고자 노력하고 있는 것으로 보인다. 



    2) 독일의 한국학


    100년에 이르는 깊은 동양학의 역사와 전통을 지닌 독일에서는 1950년대 한국어 강좌가 신설된 이래 꾸준한 발전을 해왔고, 현재 20여개 대학에 한국학 혹은 한국어 강좌가 개설되어 있다. 그중 7개 대학이 한국학 학위과정을 제공하고 있다.

    독일과 오스트리아 한국학 연구자들이 참가하여 창립한 독일어권내 한국학회, Vereinigung für Koreaforschung (VfK) e.V. im deutschsprachigen Raum (in German), The Association for Korean Studies in German Speaking Countries (in English)는 2년 마다 인문 사회과학, 어학을 어우르는 한국학 학술대회를 개최해오고 있다.  2018년 프랑크푸르트 괴테 대학에서 개최한 제8회 독일어권 한국학 대회에서는 48명의 신진, 중진학자 그리고 차세대 한국학을 주도해갈 대학원생 발표자들이 다양한 분야의 연구 결과들을 발표하여, 지속적으로 발전하고 있는 독일어권내 한국학의 학문적 교류와 협력을 위한 네트워크 확대에 귀중한 장이 되었다.


    3) 프랑크푸르트 괴테 대학 한국학


    프랑크푸르트 괴테 대학 한국학은 인문 사회과학과 한국어를 포괄하고, 북한학 그리고 동아시아 지역학과 연계하는 융합적 트랜스네셔널 지역학을 지향하며 교육과 연구사업에 전념해왔다. 2007년 한국어 강의로 시작하여 2011년 부터 학부학위과정으로 확장되었고, 동아시아학 석사과정내 한국학 수업이 증설되어 양적으로 질적으로 꾸준한 성장을 해왔다. 2019년 현재  200여명의 학생이 학부 프로그램에 등록하였고, 6명의 박사과정생이 수학중이다. (홈페이지, https://www.uni-frankfurt.de/54868172/Home) 이러한 성장의 동력이 된 것은 한국학에 대한 지역적 요구, 대학측의 성장의지 그리고 한국정부의 지원이라
    할 수 있다.     



    괴테 대학은 한국학중앙연구원과 한국교육부 지원으로2015년 부터 2021년 까지 한국학 씨앗형 사업 (AKS Seed Program of Korean Studies)을 진행하고 있고,  그외에도 독일 중앙정부와 헤센 주정부로 부터도 연구사업들을 수혜받아 한국에 대한 심도깊은 연구 사업과 교육 사업을 수행해 왔다.


    독일 내 한국학에 대한 관심이 지속적으로 증가함에 따라 괴테대학 한국학에 대한 정보를 폭넓게 공유하기 위해 최근에는 학과 소개 비디오를 제작하였고, 이 비디오는  SNS 상에서 다음의 링크를 통해 시청할 수 있다. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUSJMNwwpxI


    앞으로도 라인-마인 (Rhein-Main) 지역에서 꾸준히 증가하는 한국학 수요에 부응 하기 위해 교육과 연구사업을 더욱 공고화하여 한국 지역 전문가 양성에 전력할 것이고, Outreach사업의 일환으로서 한국영화제 Project-K와 한국어 UCC 대회등을 지속적으로 개최하여 헤센주내 한국문화와 한국어 확산에도
    기여할 것이다.

    1. Korean Studies in Europe


      The steady growth of Korean Studies in Europe is clearly reflected in the Korea Foundation’s own survey on Korean Studies abroad. There are 236 universities across Europe that offer Korean Studies-related courses, and among these universities 112 offer degree programs in Korean Studies.


      The Association for Korean Studies in Europe (AKSE) was founded in 1977 and has held the AKSE Conference every two years since. The organization also publishes the AKSE Newsletter annually (http://94.136.40.103/~koreanstudies.eu/?page_id=48).


      Recently, prominent Korean Studies scholars in the Social Sciences have come together with rising scholars within the same field to create the Social Sciences Korean Studies European Network (SoKEN). This organization holds annual workshops in Europe to develop Social Science approaches and share research findings in the field of Korean Studies. Additionally, there have been great efforts to advance research on Korean linguistics and teaching Korean language, and in 2007 the European Association for Korean Language Education (EAKLE) was established. This group holds a conference every other year to provide a venue for exchange of research outputs amongst educators of the Korean language. In this way, Korean Studies in Europe covers several different fields including the Humanities, the traditional domain of conventional area studies, as well as the Social Sciences and Linguistics.
    Efforts are being made to maintain this balance as well as improve the breadth and depth of Korean Studies research and education in Europe.

    2. Korean Studies in Germany


      East Asian Studies has a history of over 100 years in Germany, and Korean Studies has steadily grown in the country since the first course on the Korean Language was offered in the 1950s. Today, roughly twenty universities run courses on Korean Studies related subjects or the Korean language. Among these, seven universities offer degree programs in Korean Studies.


      German-speaking Korean Studies scholars in Germany and Austria have joined together to form the Association for Korean Studies in German Speaking Countries (in German: Vereinigung für Koreaforschung (VfK) e.V. im deutschsprachigen Raum) and hold an academic conference every two years that focuses on the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Linguistics. At Goethe University of Frankfurt in 2018, the Eighth Conference of the Association for Korean Studies in German Speaking Countries was held with approaching fifty presentations by prominent, rising, and next generation scholars sharing the results of their research in a variety of fields. This meeting was a precious opportunity to expand networks of academic exchange and cooperation among scholars of Korean Studies in German-speaking regions.

    3. Korean Studies at Goethe University of Frankfurt


      Korean Studies at Goethe University of Frankfurt includes the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Korean Language. The focus is on education and research, aiming to connect with North Korean Studies and East Asia Studies to promote interdisciplinary and transnational Area Studies. The first Korean Language course was opened in 2007. An undergraduate degree program in Korean Studies has been offered since 2011, as have Korean Studies-related courses in the East Asian Studies Master’s Degree Program. Currently there are about 200 undergraduate students enrolled in the Korean Studies program as well as six students in the Ph.D. program (Website: https://www.uni-frankfurt.de/54868172/Home). The driving forces behind this growth are the demand for courses in Korean Studies from learners, willingness on the part of the university to develop this program with acknowledging the generous support of the Korean government.


      Goethe University of Frankfurt is currently implementing a project, which began in 2015 and will end in 2021, as part of the AKS Seed Program for Korean Studies, which is funded by the Academy of Korean Studies (AKS) and the ROK Ministry of Education. Furthermore, Frankfurt Korean Studies have undertaken other research projects supported by the German Federal Government and the Hesse State Government facilitating in-depth research and education on Korea.


      As interest in Korean Studies in Germany has continued to increase, a video has recently been produced to introduce the Korean Studies department and provide extensive information about Korean Studies in Frankfurt.

      In the future, to respond to the rising demand for Korean Studies in the Rhein-Main region, further continuous efforts will be made to consolidate education and research projects and train a new generation of experts in Korean Studies in the region. Also, as part of our outreach activities, we will continue to operate “Project-K,” a Korean Film Festival, and the Korean Language UCC Contest to encourage interest in Korean culture and language in the Hesse region.
