  • 요크대는『한국을 세계로, 세계를 한국학으로(Korea in the World, the World in Korean Studies)』(연구책임자: 박현옥 교수) 과제로 2018년부터 5년 간 해외한국학 중핵대학 육성사업을 수행한다. 그 일환으로 연구팀은 지난 2월 1일 한국학 교육 진흥 연구소(Korean Office for Research and Education, KORE)를 개소하였다.


    연구소 개소식에는 한국학중앙연구원 안병욱 원장과 한국학진흥사업단 구난희 단장이 참석하였다. 안병욱 원장은 기조연설 “Korean Studies: A Global Perspective”에서 보다 큰 한국의 발전을 위해 한국학을 글로벌 보편성을 갖는 학문으로 발전시켜 줄 것을 희망하였다. 개소식 참석과 아울러 토론토대, 주토론토총영사관을 방문하여 캐나다 한국학 진흥 현황과 관련한 간담회를 가졌다.


    요크대는 캐나다 대학으로는 2008년 최초로 해외한국학 중핵대학 육성사업에 선정된 University of British Columbia에 이어 10년 만에 같은 사업에 선정된 두 번째 기관으로, 이번 연구소 개소를 계기로 캐나다를 비롯한 북미 지역 한국학은 더욱 활성화할 것으로 전망된다.

    Opening of the Korean Office for Research and Education at York University, Canada


    York University has been participating in the Core University Program for Korean Studies since May 2018 under the project entitled “Korea in the World, the World in Korean Studies” (Project Director: Hyun-ok Park). York University has sought to make Korean Studies into a frame for transnational exchange, and as part of this effort opened the Korean Office for Research and Education (KORE).


    The President of the Academy of Korean Studies Ahn Byung-ook and the Director of the Korean Studies Promotion Service Nan-hee Ku attended the KORE inauguration ceremony on February 1. President Ahn Byung-ook gave a keynote address entitled “Korean Studies: A Global Perspective” during the ceremony. His speech emphasized the cultural dynamism the Korean people have shown throughout the ages from prehistoric times to the present, and expressed his hope that Korean Studies research would develop a sense of global applicability in order to further Korea’s development. Following the ceremony, visits were made to the University of Toronto and the Korean Consul General in Toronto to hold discussions on the current state of Korean Studies promotion in Canada.


    York University is only the second institution in Canada to participate in the Core University Program for Korean Studies following the University of British Columbia which was selected 10 years earlier in 2008. It is expected that with the opening of this research center Korean Studies will be invigorated further in North America.
