Korean Studies at Goethe University of Frankfurt

    Yonson Ahn

(Professor and Director of Korean Studies, Goethe University of Frankfurt)

Established in 1914, the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University of Frankfurt am Main is one of the largest universities in Germany with 16 colleges and five campuses. Through internationally prominent and innovative research, the university has produced 19 Nobel Prize-winners. The university is currently home to almost 48,000 students and 5,300 staff.

As the only university in the state of Hessen focusing on Asian Studies, other Asia-related departments from neighbouring universities were merged into Goethe University of Frankfurt in 2008. Following this merger, the Interdisciplinary Centre for East Asian Studies (IZO) was established in order to facilitate the provision of more intensive Asian regional studies courses. As a result, the Korean Studies programme, which has run language courses since 2007, has witnessed significantly growth in terms of both academic quantity and quality, with the number of students registered and the aggregate research output increasing since 2011. Korean Studies is now offered as both a minor and major within the Empirical Linguistics BA programme, with a total of approximately 160 BA students and three PhD candidates. MA courses are offered within East Asian Studies programme. Currently, the Korean Studies faculty is comprised of one professor, two Korean language lecturers, three research fellows, one administrator, and one or two part-time lecturers.

A professorship in Korean Studies was established in 2014 with five-year financial support from the Korea Foundation. Sponsored by the Academy of Korean Studies and the Ministry of Education in Korea, the Seed Program for Overseas Korean Studies (2015-2021) has been significantly contributing to consolidating the foundation of Korean Studies at Goethe University of Frankfurt, strengthening its sustainable education capacity, and conducting research on multilateral reciprocity between Korea and the global community. Furthermore, by recruiting PhD research fellows and MA research assistants through the program, great efforts have been made to train the future generation of Korean Studies scholars in Germany.

Through systematic and comprehensive development of curricula covering both pre-modern and modern North and South Korea, as well as through the introduction of innovative education methods such as digital E-learning, constant efforts have been made to further enhance and strengthen the quality of the Korean Studies programme, deepening knowledge on Korea and strengthening Korean language competency. Furthermore, Goethe University of Frankfurt’s Korean Studies programme has received grants from the German federal and local governments to conduct intensive research projects on Korea.

Goethe University of Frankfurt’s Korean Studies programme will host “The 8th Conference of the Association of Korean Studies in German-Speaking Countries” in November 2018 with generous sponsorship from the Korea Foundation. 48 Junior and senior scholars will share their research findings at the conference, which will serve as an excellent platform for participants to present their research and exchange ideas for potential future collaboration.

Being home to the second largest community of overseas Koreans in Europe, Frankfurt is also the city in which the majority of Korean corporations have their German or European branches and headquarters. This in turn provides graduates and students with greater opportunities for career development and academic cooperation, leveraging one of the major strengths of Korean Studies at Frankfurt, further developing the program. Graduates have worked for Korean public organisations, Korean or German firms in the Frankfurt area,  or found a job in Korea. Others choose to pursue higher education through enrolling in an MA or PhD program. These graduates contribute to strengthening Korea-Germany relations in civil society.

Graduates and students studying Korean Studies in Frankfurt have greatly contributed to promoting Korean culture and the discipline of Korean Studies in the local community in Hessen by annually organising “Project K—The Korean Film Festival”. The festival was first held on the Goethe University of Frankfurt campus in 2010 with financial support from the Korean Consulate General in Frankfurt. It later expanded and relocated to the CineStar multiplex in the Frankfurt city centre, becoming one of the major Korean film festivals in Europe with 5,000 locals attending the 26 Korean film screenings over five days.

Unlike most other Korean film festivals, Project K—the Korean Film Festival is student initiated, with students and graduates of the Goethe University of Frankfurt Korean Studies program leading the organisation and implementation of the festival. This event has played a significant role in promoting Korean culture and Korean Studies in the region, exerting a substantial impact on Korea’s public diplomacy in Germany. Student event organisers have also seen their contributions pay dividends in the job market after graduation, with a number having been recruited in the cultural sector.

The Korean Studies programme in Frankfurt endeavours to become a hub of Korean Studies in Europe through implementing its long-term plan for development and through the Seed Program for Overseas Korean Studies, strengthening education capacity, training the next generation of Korean Studies scholars, localising and globalising the discipline, and holding outreach programmes such as Project K—the Korean Film Festival.
