2017 Consulting Meetings in China for the Core University Program for Korean Studies and the Seed Program for Korean Studies
The Program Planning Division of the Korean Studies Promotion Service (Division Head Dr. Won Seok Jang, Dr. Mee-Ryang Jeong, and Dong-seop Lee) visited Yanbian University, Hebei University, and Shandong University from September 18 to September 22, 2017. These three Chinese universities are part of the program for Korean Studies which is supported by the Korean Studies Promotion Service.
Yanbian University joined the Core University Program for Korean Studies in 2015 and will continue to participate through 2020. The program at Yanbian University is run by the Graduate School for International Studies, which was established in 2014 as a center for research and education on the Korean Peninsula, and the Center for Inter-Korean Studies, which was established as a priority research center by the Chinese Ministry of Education. Yanbian University is committed to fostering future generations of scholars which can approach Korean Studies in a more complex manner to meet the social demands of today. During the consulting meetings, the representatives from the Korean Studies Promotion Service surveyed the current situation at Yanbian University’s Graduate School of International Studies in terms of their publications, human resources, courses, and lectures.
Hebei University joined the Seed Program for Korean Studies in 2017 and is conducting a program entitled “Constructing a Platform for Korean Studies Education and Research in Western-Central China.” In particular, this program seeks to preserve the regional characteristics of the Lianchi Academy and is developing a new curriculum on Korean Seowon culture which we are expecting to be quite effective.
Shandong University has been carrying out the Seed Program for Korean Studies since 2015 on its Jinan campus. The research team at Shandong University is emphasizing training for translators in cultural translation as it relates to cultural exchange between Korea and China. The Korean Studies Promotion Service hopes that Shandong University can develop into a mecca of Korea-China humanities research not only as it relates to language but also culture, history, and philosophy.
Through these consulting meetings with the three universities, the personnel of the Korean Studies Promotion Service realized that expectations for Korean Studies in China in general increased. Also, we were able to confirm the enthusiasm for specialization in different areas of Korean Studies according to the region and research team. Furthermore, there were also calls for information and human exchange among the personnel participating in these programs. (Translated by Benjamin Engel)
