Codruta Sintionean (Babes-Bolyai University)
The Development of Korean Studies at Babes-Bolyai University, Romania
Codruta Sintionean (Babes-Bolyai University)
In Romania, a country located in Eastern Europe and a member of the European Union, only the University of Bucharest and the university where I work - Babeș-Bolyai University - offer a BA in Korean Studies, and both programs are actually focusing on language and literature. Whereas the University of Bucharest has been offering a Minor in ‘Korean Language and Literature’ since 2005, Babeș-Bolyai University has created both a Major and a Minor in ‘Korean Language and Literature’ in 2008. There is a balance in the geographical distribution of students to these two universities, because they attract students from distinct areas of the country, as Bucharest is in the Southern part of Romania, while Cluj-Napoca is in the North-Western part.
Until 2008, my university offered ‘Japanese Language and Literature’ as a BA Minor (full undergraduate program, since 1999), and Korean and Chinese languages as elective courses (2 hours/week, since 1997). In 2008, the Faculty of Letters created the Department of Asian Languages and Literatures, which includes a Korean section, a Chinese section, and a Japanese section. Consequently, the Department now offers ‘Language and Literature’ programs in all three languages, both Majors and Minors.
The first promotion to enroll in the Korean program in 2008-2009 consisted of only 2 students (1 Major, 1 Minor), and it took two-three years until the program started to have a higher, steady number of enrolled students. Today, the program boasts a total of approximately 120 students in all levels (1st, 2nd and 3rd years, Major and Minor), and, judging from the competition among candidates at the entrance exam, it is one of the most successful study programs in the Faculty of Letters. The program started to attract a large number of students since 2010, under the substantial influence of Hallyu in Romania, and has built a good reputation due to several strong points: students can enroll in the program every year, so students from all regions of the country apply, even remote southern regions and Bucharest; we have always had at least one Korean lecturer; students who study in our program have the opportunity to receive scholarships and study abroad in South Korea and Europe; the first Korean Cultural Center founded in Romania (in 2007) is affiliated to the university and the program.
Among the notable achievements of the program was the organization, in 27-30 July 2010, of the first conference in Korean Studies ever to take place in Romania. This was the 7th edition of the Korean Studies Graduate Students Convention (KSGSC), created under the auspices of the Association for Korean Studies in Europe (AKSE), financed by the Korea Foundation, and held every year in a different European university. The conference was attended by 34 participants from 17 different universities (over 10 countries). Paper presenters were European and South Korean students enrolled in MA, PhD, or young scholars who had received their PhD in the previous 2 years. The main purpose of organizing the 7th edition of KSGSC at Babes-Bolyai University was the promotion of Korean Studies in the Romanian academic environment. Also, organizing such a prominent event in Romania proved that Korean Studies in Romania was becoming more and more visible in the international field. Previous organizers of this event were universities which have a long established tradition of Korean Studies: Leiden University, Ruhr University in Bochum, SOAS in London, the Oriental Institute in Prague, Edinburgh University, and Moscow State University.
In 2015, the teaching staff of the ‘Korean Language and Literature’ program (3 members) applied for an Academy of Korean Studies Seed Program, after having identified several areas in need of development: First, the curriculum lacked courses in the theory and practice of translation, but graduates of the program often wanted to work as translators after graduation and they were not properly prepared as future translators. Second, the absence of books and manuals written in Romanian, about Korean language, the history of Korea, Korean culture and literature etc., that could be used as teaching materials, was deafening. And, finally, graduates from the ‘Korean Language and Literature’ program were not aware of the opportunities to work in positions where they could use their knowledge of Korean language and culture.
The project, entitled “Curriculum Development and Teaching Materials for Korean Language and Culture at Babeș-Bolyai University,” started on July 1st, 2015 (to be completed on June 30, 2018). It is addressing the issues mentioned above in the following manner:
Two Visiting Experts with experience in the theory and practice of translation visit Babeș-Bolyai University every year in order to teach courses in which students learn how to approach and perform the translation of Korean texts. The Visiting Experts have thus created two courses tailored for our students: Dr. Andreas Schirmer, Assistant Professor at the University of Vienna, Austria, holds every winter semester a course entitled Translating Korean Literature; and Dr. Jerôme de Wit, Junior Professor at the University of Tübingen, Germany, holds every spring semester a course entitled A Practical Course in the Translation of Korean Texts. Thanks to their contribution, students have gained confidence in approaching translation, and I am confident translations of Korean novels will be accomplished by our graduates in the near future.
In order to address the lack of published materials about Korea in Romanian, we are working on three different books in two target areas: language and culture, to be published in 2018. The three books are: Kim Huntae, Korean Language Textbook – Beginner’s Level; Kwak Dong Hun, A Dictionary of Korean Grammar. Patterns for University Course; Codruţa Sîntionean, A Cultural History of Korea (prospective titles). These books will eventually provide the teaching staff in Romania with proper tools for better teaching, using materials that are specifically designed for Romanian students (and not for English speakers).
Also, we have created an Employment Orientation Seminar in order to connect graduate students with the work environment. The seminar introduces Korean companies located in Romania to final year students and recent graduates. The objective is to connect students with Korean companies where they can get employed and use their knowledge of Korean language and culture. As part of this informative process, a large group of 45 students makes a separate trip every year in October to a Korean company. Through this opportunity, our students can get a sense of pride and strengthen their motivation to learn Korean.
Besides addressing these issues, we have created a competitive environment in which students are stimulated to study more earnestly and set their own objectives. In order to accomplish this objective, we offer prizes at language competitions (3 competitions / year), scholarships (2 students / year) and field trips to Korea (2 students / year). We believe the excellence of students is a good indicator of the quality of the program, and, also, the basis for preparing prominent future Korean Studies scholars.
The most notable such opportunity for students is the International Korean Speech Contest and Educators’ Workshop (“국제한국어 말하기 대회 및 교육자 워크샵”). This event targets students and professors from universities located in Romania and bordering countries: University of Bucharest (Romania), St. Kliment Ohridski Sofia University (Bulgaria), Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest (ELTE, Hungary). Every year in March, we invite 3 students and 1 professor from each of these universities and hold a contest of Korean Language. The contest enhances the Korean language proficiency of students and also gives participant students a motivation for taking Korean Studies as a Major in Graduate School (where such Majors are available). The contest is followed by a “Quiz Contest: How much do you know about Korea?” with prizes, held for participating students and students in the audience.
As part of the event, educators of Korean Language and Korean Studies from Romania, Hungary and Bulgaria gain a useful experience through meeting in a workshop which offers an opportunity to exchange their teaching methods and knowledge.
The themes of the annual workshop are:
2016 “Korean language education: The use of culture in theory and practice”
2017 “Suggestions for accurately teaching Korean history and culture”
2018 “The exploration of ways to develop the Korean Studies Programs”
In conclusion, we have tailored our Seed Program for Korean Studies to our needs, in order to further develop our program, and also strengthen the main dimensions of our work, education and research.
